An Evening with Orland Nutt

The Inimatable Orland Nutt

The Inimatable Orland Nutt

Be prepared for a wild ride as NW Film Center takes us on a journey through the mind of local compositor & filmmaker Orland Nutt, long time Bent Image Lab collaborator.  Orland will be showing a dense collection from over a decade of work, and premiering his latest work, Bear of Heaven.

Orland’s style is in a category of it’s own and he is undeniably one of Portland’s gems.  This is a rare event and a night not to be missed.  I can imagine it would be a daunting task to tease a 90 minute program devoted to his work, but here’s a trailer that offers up a glimpse nonetheless:

Orland Nutt 2014 Retrospective Trailer

Among the older highlights are: Escalator Meditation, an early abstract work; video letter movies from his Dear Peter series, which intimately share his worldview; and selections from his visually ornate poetry series including I Am Into Your Fire (which draws inspiration from, among other things, a classic scene from the original Star Trek TV series), where odd characters perform poems in fantastical settings.

Orland will be on hand to introduce the films.  Step out for this one!

Thursday, July 10, 2014 – 7:00pm
NW Film Center at the Portland Art Museum
Whitsell Auditorium
1219 SW Park Avenue
$9, $8 students

For more info or to purchase tickets, head on over to the NW Film Center page.

Brad Peebler

And good times were had by all.

Wanted to take a quick second of everyone’s time to thank Brad Peebler and Yazan Malkosh for a fantastic night of enlightenment and for showing us some of that MODO mojo. It continues to evolve by leaps and bounds and is such a cool app for so many reasons, and Brad Peebler is one of them. An industry veteran who’s been around since (seemingly) the dawn of time, Brad brings a wisdom to these presentations that is seldom eclipsed. They say the walls hear all – and the walls of the Newspace Center for Photography are still riddled with arrows. Arrows from a blind Ray Fairy. Hey, if you don’t know, I ain’t gonna tell ya. But let’s just say Brad leaves his mark.

Yazan Malkosh and SLIK

The ever-so-SLIK Yazan Malkosh

Yazan closed out the show with a demo of his Slik 2 kit of presets, scenes, items, and materials that help make MODO feel like a real photography studio. It’s the closest thing I’ve ever seen to digitally lighting something as if it were on set – and Yazan you had us from the first click of your mouse, where you placed a reflection directly on the model without touching a light. Genius.

Big thanks to Gideon Klindt for scrambling and doing a lot of last minute planning and venue scouting once the event was greenlit.  Sponsorship from  The Foundry, 3DV and 52 Ltd was also very helpful in making this event a reality.

If you’ve not given MODO a spin, you owe it to yourself to check it out!
